Accommodations in Puna

Looking for accommodations in Puna?

Well, there are no hotels or resorts. There are different types of short-term accommodations in Puna to choose from. Maybe you are looking for a Bed and Breakfast in Volcano Village, Pahoa or Keaau or a Vacation rental in Volcano Village, Pahoa or Keaau. There are many really nice ones but there are also a few scary ones, too. You should also be aware of the fact, that some of the businesses have some mold problems that sometimes forces some people even to move out. So, it is important to have a reference or recommendation from a friend, colleague or reputable website.

Whether you are headed to Puna for a vacation or you are looking to buy property, you need a place to stay. And we do recommend that you book your accommodations in Puna well in advance.

When we first went to Puna, we only started planning our trip 6 days prior to departure. We figured that since it was only an inter-island trip for us that it would be a breeze to arrange. To be honest, that was a big mistake.

It was a mistake for 2 reasons:

  1. We couldn’t get a place in the area we wanted. I think we called almost every Bed and Breakfast in the Puna area and they were all booked for at least some if not the entire time we would need a room. We were even willing to switch rooms after a day or two just to get in somewhere but even that proved a daunting task.
  2. We paid more for our accommodations than we had planned on paying. Rates for B&B’s can be especially high – even in cases where they are not very nice. You really need to ask for details and a good, clear photograph of the room.

At first we thought the difficulty was because we were traveling over the long weekend around President’s Day when a lot of other people might be taking a trip, too. But after checking booking schedules for different accommodations in Puna since then, it became clear to us that many places are booked way ahead of time – holiday or no holiday.

For two full days we searched the Internet for a suitable place to stay and it was really stressful and tiring. We quickly realized that we were in trouble. We found a few B&B’s here and there, but not a really good directory that would list all of them. Every place we called was booked or just too expensive. $300 a night was not in our budget! Even recommendations from friends did not pan out at that point.

Eventually, we came across Rentalo.com and through that site we were finally lucky, (and greatly relieved). If you need a Vacation Rental or Place to Stay in Puna or Hilo, I would check out Rentalo.com because it makes choosing and booking your accommodations in Puna a lot easier than going it on your own. Click here to inquire now and receive instant offers from property owners. Just type either "USA Hi Keaau". "USA Hi Pahoa", "USA Hi Volcano" or "USA Hi Hilo" in the search box there.

There were no accommodations available for us in Puna on that trip and so we ended up staying in Hilo. It wasn’t so bad and it is a good back up spot. It was a mid-range vacation rental run by a nice local family. It was close to Honoli’i beach and all that Hilo offers with a wider variety of shopping locations and restaurants than can be found in Puna.

So, although Puna is not the most famous spot in Hawaii, it seems to be hard to get last minute accommodations there and the prices are just as high as in Kailua (Oahu) or Waikiki. The average price for a B&B varies greatly depending on where it is located.

For some reason, the high prices of the accommodations in Puna don’t seem to match the really affordable housing prices. Perhaps it is because there are not enough B&Bs, or because there are over 1 million people coming yearly to visit the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park - many of which are staying in Hilo or Puna.

At some point, we even considered running a B&B in Puna ourselves, but we will have to get back to you on that one….

To get good accommodations in Puna at the best price, be sure to book well in advance!
