Hi'iaka's Healing Herb Garden

Barbara Fahs, Owner of Hi’iaka’s Healing Herb Garden is a Master Gardener and Herbalist. She grows on her 1 acre property over 100 species of Hawaiian plants and has dedicated her life to conserving and educating about endangered Hawaiian medicinal plants from the la‘au lapa‘au tradition of natural healing.

You can choose between a self-guided tour or a fully guided tour. All tours by appointment only.

Barbara will be the tour guide, she will talk about the history and medicinal properties of the various plants in the garden, give you tips on how to set up your own healing garden and which herbs to use for different ailments.

Plus you can participate in workshops and training in the learning center, apply for a Residency Internship and stay on the property and buy some natural remedies at the gift shop, where you can also buy Barbara’s book "Super Simple Guide to creating Hawaiian Gardens".

Location: close to the ocean on 2nd Street (Aloe) in the Hawaiian Paradise Park subdivision. The garden is on the ocean side at 15-1667 2nd Street.

Fuku-Bonsai Cultural Center

The Fuku-Bonsai Cultural Center offers a beautiful collection of indoor miniature trees (specializing in Dwarf Schefflera True Indoor Bonsai). David Fukumoto, president and founder of Fuku-Bonsai is actually a pioneer in True Indoor Bonsai plants. His second specialty is the breeding of Hawaiian Micro-Lobsters, which are smaller than a dime. These crustaceans can live in the right environment for up to 20 years and have become very popular for desktop aquariums.

Kilauea Caverns of Fire

The Kilauea Caverns of Fire offers tours into a network of lava tubes. The Kazamura Lava Tubes are actually the longest and deepest system in the world, in which you will see Stalactites, Stalagmites and Flowstone.

You can choose between a Scenic Walking Tour (1+ hrs.), which is easy and an Adventure Tour (3+ hours), which is longer and physically more challenging. If you want to participate you will have to wear long pants and closed toe shoes. Flashlights, hard hats and gloves will be provided. Ages 5 and up.

Hilo Coffee Mill

The Hilo Coffee Mill is with 24 acres the largest Coffee Farm on the windward side of the Big Island. It is also processing coffee grown in other parts of Puna, Hamakua and Kau. Coffee business has a great history in Puna, but when sugar cane offered better income, coffee was put on the back burner. Since the recline in sugar cane demand, small coffee companies have appeared with great service and great tasting coffee.
