Mar 13, Puna volcano attracts more visitors

Thousands of visitors have visited the new lava flow of the Puna Volcano Kilauea. The Puna people living in this area are a little bit overwhelmed with the amount of people arriving, bringing more traffic and sometimes leaving a lot of trash behind. We would like to see people be more aware and clean up after themselves.

The lava access road is open at 2 p.m. until 10 p.m daily. The last cars will be allowed in the gate at 8 p.m. so that state and county workers can clear the area by the time the area closes.

To get there, take Highway 130 past Pahoa until the highway ends at the access road to the lava viewing area.

After parking along the two-mile access road, walk to the trailhead and then hike about a half-mile over old lava to the viewing site. Bring water and a flashlight for night viewing.

New spot for Puna Lava Tours. After the lava cut through the almost abandoned subdivision Royal Gardens, a lava flow crossed the access road at the end of Highway 130 and hit the Puna coast ocean Thursday morning. Puna officials have worked now together with scientists at the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory to create a safe viewing area for tourists, that is only about 50-100 feet from the lava flow. An amazing site, which is supposed to attract thousands of people in the upcoming weeks.

Remember: no bathrooms, no shops, no water, no cell phone coverage and stay in the clearly marked safe areas.

Mar 5, Puna Traffic Improvements at Maku'u Farmers Market

from the Honolulu Advertiser:

Gov. Linda Lingle has released $535,000 to construct a left-turn lane on Kea'au-Pahoa Road into the Maku'u Farmers Market in Puna and to install guardrails in the area to provide a barrier between traffic and pedestrians.

Kea'au-Pahoa Road, which is the major two-lane route passing through the Puna District of the Big Island, has a 55 mph speed limit at the Maku'u Farmers Market site.

"This project will reduce traffic backup caused by cars turning left into the farmers market," Lingle said. "More importantly, it will enhance safety for pedestrians and fast-moving traffic along this portion of the highway."

The total project cost is estimated to be $540,000, of which $5,000 was previously released for design. Design is ongoing and scheduled to be completed this month. Construction is scheduled to begin in June and be completed in August.

Jan 24, Kilauea Volcano Update

You want to know how the Kilauea crater was created? Well , new released scientific evidence suggest that the Kilauea crater was actually created by a rupture caused by the weight of the Mauna Loa. That means that once the Kilauea builds up in size it will probably also put a tear in the earth crust and if it is big enough a new volcano will appear. But don't wait for that, you will not be around. Rather check the Kilauea Volcano now. LOL.

Jan 23, Punatics don't like newbies

I just read an article in San Francisco Chronicle titled "Aloha spirit missing on the Big Island" and the person (supposedly with a family history in Hawaii for over 100 years) was saying that even though real estate prices and location seem to be great in Puna, there is one drawback. Hey and it's not the volcano, he is talking about the residents of Puna, who sometimes like to call themselves Punatics. Is that true? Well I'm sure there are some. Punatics like the place untouched, don't want big operations to take place (like Walmart in Pahoa) or hotel resorts on the coastline. They like the beauty of Puna as is. But that they actively will try to get you out of there if you are new, is nothing but a fairy tale. Some may have had bad experience, but let me tell you this is not a Puna specific thing. When we first got to Puna we were actually surprised how friendly the people were. We came from Oahu - so talk about missing Aloha spirit. This can happen anywhere in the world.

If you want to buy Puna Real Estate try to do a proper neighborhood check up, try to not interfere with the beauty of Puna and you will be welcome.

Jan 23, Why is Puna Real Estate really such a good deal?

I also finished an article from a reputable Hawaiian real estate company, who are mainly operating in Kailua (Oahu). The lady who is the spokesperson, said that the real estate market is predicted to stay stable in 2008 and will actually go up in 2009. She said that in her area she didn't even see a personal sales decrease in the late months of 2007, because of two reasons: Selling houses in a good location and have an honest price for it.

That's exactly what I am always saying and this will be the reason why by 2009 Puna will have the largest population of all 9 Big Island districts. You got everything from ocean view real estate to complete jungle farms.

Just consider that there was recently a sale of a Puna Ocean view property for around $590,000. That is the lowest price for ocean view property in any of the Hawaiian Islands.

So no matter how you flip, if you like luxury real estate, low price real estate, jungle or alternative lifestyle, Puna is so big and so many undeveloped lots that you will probably find what you dream of there.

Jan 17, Local Airfares update - Hawaiian Airlines cheapest

Hawaiian Airlines dropped their local airfares between Honolulu and Hilo from $49 to $42, while Aloha Airlines raised its prices by a whooping $10 to $59 and go! Airlines remains at $49.

Aloha said the higher price is due to rising fuel cost, even though the prices for all other interisland flights remain the same.

Right now Hawaiian Airlines is probably the best bet, but that could change anytime.

Great news for divers who visit Hawaii. The National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration says in a new release that the Big Island shows the largest percentage of live coral of all the popular Hawaiian Islands. It actually covers 57 of the waters surrounding the island.

Specialists say that this is due to the fact that the Big Island is younger than the other islands.

Jan 16, Home Owners Insurance Challenge

Home owners in Puna can get home owners insurance from HPIA (Hawaii Property Insurance Association) in areas that no other insurance company (except Lloyd's) would cover. I'm talking about lava zones 1 and 2. But after recent event in the Royal Garden subdivision and the lava flows that destroyed Kapoho in the 60's and Kalapana in the 80's some people are not sure if that insurance program is actually a good thing. Of course all Punatics are grateful, because at least you can get some of your property insured (up to $250,000). But even though the program was installed to help people who already have built in Puna, it also invited a bunch of new owners, who are building in these so-called hazardous areas.

Puna is expected to have the largest population of all 9 Big Island districts by 2015 and is definitely the fastest-growing. Specialists warn that the risk increases as more people build there.

But if you want to live in Hawaii, you might not be able to build anywhere else, plus Puna offers a Hawaii of the old days, privacy, space and pristine nature.

People who are buying here take that risk otherwise they would not be here. It's not that they can't see the risk. Look at the mainland. There is risk where ever you buy, whether it's severe flooding, bush fires, tornados, snow up to your neck etc. This last year showed that Puna is still a great and affordable place.

Are we surprised that a lava flow might threaten the Royal Gardens subdivision? Of course not. Hey the selling point of these properties was from the beginning the spectacular views of the volcano. There you go. After multiple flows over the last 25 years, there is hardly any structure left there and the access road to the subdivision is covered too. For me this subdivision is one of the greatest land speculation scams in Puna. The subdivision boom in the 60s and 70s made this possible. But who wants to live 12 miles from an active volcano anyway? Especially after what it has done Royal Gardens over the last 25 years.
